This 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 XL is a factory Q code car that was purchased new in Phoenix, Arizona and remained there up until the time it was completely restored. The car is the 6th car listed in the 427 Galaxie Registry. Of the 3140 427 Galaxies built, only 76 are currently recorded!
The Ford is equipped with the 4-speed Borg-Warner Super T-10 which was mandatory with the 427. It also has the proper transistorized ignition, AM-FM radio w/ reverb, a clock, vinyl covered top and an outside rear view mirror. The chassis has the proper factory steering stops, mandatory manual steering (power was not an option), 17" steering wheel, .66 diameter stabilizer bar, and 11×3 brake drums.
In 1991, the car was treated to a complete, nut and bolt rotisserie restoration using mostly NOS parts. Although it was in need of restoration at the time, the body was completely rust free and had been sitting outside in the desert after the original owner had damaged the gas tank many years earlier. The vehicle was stripped down to metal and built as-new from the ground up. Given the rarity of these cars, and parts as well, the restoration took almost 5 years to complete. The car is without a doubt one of the nicest 1964 Galaxies on the road today. The condition of the trim, chrome, detailing of the undercarriage, and originality of parts is exceptional. The car was refinished in the correct Rangoon Red with a white vinyl top over a white interior and looks stunning
The engine and the transmission are original to the car although engine now uses a stroker crank and custom pistons. With the displacement currently at 452 CI and the overall compression at 9.5, the motor runs comfortably on pump gas. A few years after the restoration, the engine was converted over to the tri-power setup and the performance is exceptional. During the restoration, the rear end was updated with a Currie 31 spline, 3.91:1 limited slip unit.
Built as a result of Ford’s "Total Performance" campaign, the Galaxie is an irrefutable monster on the street, and a very rare original Muscle car. For the Ford enthusiast, there may be no better addition for a collection.
