This 1965 Mustang K-code GT Fastback is nicely finished in its original Ivy Green over black pony interior. The car was built in San Jose, California on April 15th, 1965 and was originally delivered at a dealership in Los Angeles for sale.
The Mustang was restored 8-10 years ago and, although it shows some signs of use, would make a terrific high-condition driver, local show car, or a shoe-in for a concourse level refinishing. The Pony interior is in great condition and although the car has a clearly restored interior otherwise, the Pony seat cover look to be excellent originals which is a nice touch of nostalgia.
In terms of GT decoding, there are a lot of different areas that can help to authenticate a car as having been born a GT. Factory GT options included front disc brakes with a single bowl master cylinder which this car has. The radiator support in GT cars had two punched holes for the fog lamp wiring, which are similarly correct on this 1965. The car has the correct gauges with the correct factory dash cut-out for proper GT gauge fitment. Because of their dual exhaust systems, factory GT cars also had extra exhaust brackets and a reinforced plate under the rear seat, also correct on this Mustang.
The engine currently in the car is not the original unit, which is fairly typical of many of these high-revving K motors, but has many of the features of a correct K-code replacement. The motor is a 1966 production 289 equipped with an era-correct 1966 Ford dual carburetor manifold sporting double Holleys. The heads are the correct "20" K-code units and the distributor is also correct for a K-code engine. The engine runs out very strong and really rips at the top end. Power runs back through the 4-speed top loader transmission and the stout 9" rear end.
For the enthusiast looking for a very rare Pony car, this 1965 Mustang K-Code GT fastback would make an excellent addition to any collection.
