After making an appearance at the Paris Auto Show in 1953, the Porsche 550 Spyder was the first car developed by Ferry Porsche specifically for racing. After a number of class wins, a limited commercial opportunity was recognized, however, in the end, just 90 prototype and customer 550 Spyders were constructed. Wendler performed most of the coachwork and depending on use, a number of different motors and set ups were utilized.

The 550 Spyder has always been one of the most popular replica vehicles, and besides its stunning good looks, the performance is just wonderful, so there is no question as to why. In an era of option laden modern cars, so rarely do we have the opportunity to experience something so purposefully built as the 550 Spyder.

This Automotive Legends 550 Spyder tips the scales at just over 1,300 lbs. There is no denying the power to weight advantage of this little car. The dual port headed VW engine with twin Weber carburetors put out a reported 130 HP which really makes this little car scoot. Without power assists (and without the need for them) this car is a pure driving machine.
