Collector owned since new, this BMW 2002 was treated to a rotisserie restoration 5 years ago. The body was completely disassembled down to a shell and was acid dipped to remove all original finishes. Next, rust was repaired and the car was refinished in gorgeous white paint. There is no unsightly undercoating lurking on the car, just completely solid metal that has been refinished from top to bottom.
The interior has been restored with new dash cap and nicely refinished Recaros from Aardvark. The black carpeting was replaced and as was all of the sound damping material. The rear seat has been deleted for a nice sporty look and the headliner has been replaced with new material.
The motor is the MM2200 HiFlo St Sport Engine. It makes a peppy 155 HP and is fed through a sweet pair of 40 DCOE side draft Weber carbs. The BMW has been upgraded with an Behr aluminum radiator with an electric fan, and also has the M3 starter. The motor has electronic ignition providing a nice big spark for the upgraded motor. Metric Mechanic uses the E12 head that has been ported for an 18% increase in flow and a bigger cam, and forged Alusil pistons.
The car is a flat out blast to drive. The suspension has been completely reworked with H&R springs, Bilstein shocks and poly bushings. The car has a big front brake kit installed and stopping is much improved and a good match for the motor and suspension. The car is a blast through the twisties, rock solid on the open road, and smooth around town. Known for its balance and poise, this nicely upgraded 2002 has just the right parts in just the right areas while maintaining the civility needed for everyday driving activities.
Offered at just a fraction of the restoration cost, this little runner is the perfect weekend sports car.
